Facilitates community access to Salem Health (e.g. receiving health care, support person of a patient, inquiring about services, attending Salem Health community health education or events, etc.) by providing language interpretation services for the language(s) indicated in job the announcement and coordinating spoken and signed language interpretation services for all other languages.
Able to arrive at the hospital within 20 minutes if called during scheduled standby.
Available on a scheduled basis for regular, standby and on-call work, including weekends, holidays and all shifts.
Minimum Qualifications Include:
* Bachelor's degree in any field; OR, meet the Educational Equivalency Requirements outlined by the Registry for the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
* RID certification required * Formal interpreting experience required or the completion of the RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Knowledge Exam or a state approved health care interpreter training course within one (1) year of hire.
* Health care experience desirable, particularly medical terminology
Within 6 months of hire:
* Complete and pass the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Knowledge Exam from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
Within 1 year of hire:
* Obtain Oregon State Health Care Interpreter Qualification
Within 5 years of hire:
* Obtain NIC Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
o Obtain Oregon State Health Care Interpreter Certification within 3 months of obtaining NIC Certification
-ASL and spoken language interpreters will maintain their certification, qualification, or licensure current and in good standing throughout the duration of their employment with Salem Health.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Include:

* Abides by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) Code of Ethics and implements guidelines laid out in the NCIHC Standards of Practice.
* Abides by the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
* Upholds trust in the profession by positively and tactfully supporting developing interpreters and educating providers on the role of an effective interpreter.
* Ability to readily implement the four California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) interpreter roles: message conveyor, message clarifier, cultural clarifier and limited patient advocate.
Core Job Functions Include:
* During hours scheduled to work, provides clear, accurate, impartial and timely language interpretation to facilitate communication between Salem Health staff and members of the Deaf and/or LEP communities. To facilitate patient care, supplements American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted interaction with finger spelling and spoken languages with sight translation when appropriate (e.g. low complexity text that is brief in length, limits concepts and terminology to things familiar to the patient, and is mainly being used for review as opposed to new teaching).
* Coordinates requests for interpreting services for all requested languages during hours scheduled to work, including making a good faith effort to arrange for interpreting services for languages not available through in-house interpreters.
* Provides interpreting services based on department guidelines, establishes priority when dealing with simultaneous requests for service to meet patient care needs, and provides medically necessary communication.
* Accurately records time, language and department for each interpreter contact in patient's electronic medical record.
Able to alert staff when possible barriers to communication are noticed (e.g. hearing impaired, sight impaired, gap in assumed common knowledge base of speakers, difference in cultural expectations, different primary language and cognitive status). Able to reformulate interpreted rendition for purposes of clarification and gauging comprehension. Able to guide provider towards appropriate mode of communication (e.g. when fingerspelling/sight translation aren't appropriate, consecutive interpreting vs. simultaneous, etc.), and requesting that care provider use simpler language or concepts as needed.
Working Conditions Include:
Standing, moving about work area, walk-level surface, & keyboard operation.
