The Northwest Access Fund is a nonprofit Community Development Loan Fund established by and for individuals with disabilities. The Fund provides low interest loans for all types of assistive technology for individuals of all ages with disabilities of all types. Assistive technology is broadly defined to include any device (both specially designed for an individual with a disability and off the shelf) that maintains or enhances the functional capabilities of a person with a disability. Examples include hearing aids, cochlear implants and hearing related assistive devices (about 40% of our loans), iphones, ipads, computers, home and vehicle accessibility modifications, wheelchairs and wheelchair copays etc. The interest rate is a flat 5% and loan terms of up to five years (depending upon type of technology and borrower's ability to repay) are available. Eligible applicants include individuals with disabilities and their family members as long as the device is intended for use by the person with a disability. We consider all sources of income including SSI and SSDI. There are no upper income limits -- and we make a special effort to assist individuals with limited income and assets (*about 80% of our borrowers are low income). In addition to assistive technology loans, we offer business equipment loans and financial coaching for individuals living in Washington and Oregon as well as Matched Savings Accounts (Washington residents only but we can refer to providers in Oregon). The Access Fund has been operating in Washington since 2004 and expanded to Oregon in 2016-17. We are looking forward to expanding our work in Oregon over the coming year.
